What size thermal paper roll do I need?

The paper roll size is determined by your printer model. The two measurements that matter are width (how wide the roll is) and diameter or length (how much paper is on the roll):

  • 80mm x 80mm — the most common size for counter receipt printers. Used in Epson TM-T82, TM-T88, Star TSP143, and most standard POS receipt printers. The 80mm refers to the width; the second 80mm refers to the roll diameter.
  • 80mm x 50mm — 80mm wide but shorter rolls (50mm diameter). Used where counter space or drawer depth is limited.
  • 58mm x 50mm — for compact and mobile thermal printers. Common in portable Bluetooth printers used with iPad POS setups.
  • 57mm x 50mm — slight variation used by some older or specific mobile printer models. Always check your printer manual for the exact spec.

If you're unsure of your roll size, check the paper compartment of your printer — the width is usually printed on the compartment lid or in the manual. Alternatively, measure the current roll with a ruler.

How to find the right roll for your printer model

  • Epson TM-T82III / TM-T82II: 80mm x 80mm
  • Epson TM-T88VI / TM-T88V: 80mm x 80mm
  • Star TSP143III / TSP100: 80mm x 80mm
  • Bixolon SRP-350 / SRP-380: 80mm x 80mm
  • Star SM-S230i (mobile): 58mm x 50mm
  • Epson TM-P20 (mobile): 58mm x 50mm

What is BPA-free thermal paper and do I need it?

BPA (Bisphenol A) is a chemical used in the heat-sensitive coating of some thermal papers. There is increasing concern about BPA absorption through skin contact with receipts, particularly for people who handle large numbers of receipts daily (retail workers, café staff). BPA-free thermal paper uses an alternative coating that produces the same print quality without BPA. We recommend BPA-free rolls for food businesses and any environment with frequent staff handling of receipts. BPA-free rolls are also required by some schools and healthcare organisations.

How many receipts per roll?

The number of receipts per roll depends on receipt length. As a rough guide for an 80mm x 80mm roll:

  • Short receipts (café, 10–15 lines): approximately 400–500 receipts per roll
  • Medium receipts (retail, 20–30 lines): approximately 200–300 receipts per roll
  • Long receipts (supermarket, 40+ lines): approximately 100–150 receipts per roll

How do I know when the roll is running out?

Most thermal paper rolls have a coloured warning stripe (typically pink or red) printed near the core. When this stripe starts appearing on receipts, you have approximately 5–10 metres of paper remaining — enough for a short period while you load a new roll. Keep a spare roll at the counter at all times to avoid running out during a busy service.

Frequently asked questions — thermal paper rolls

Q: Can I use any thermal roll in my thermal printer?
A: As long as the width matches your printer's specification, yes. All thermal paper is heat-sensitive, so brand does not affect compatibility. However, using the wrong width will cause the paper to jam or print incorrectly. Always match the width (80mm or 58mm) to your printer's requirement.

Q: Do thermal paper rolls expire?
A: Yes. Thermal paper has a shelf life of approximately 2–5 years if stored correctly — away from heat, humidity, and direct sunlight. Rolls stored in a hot stockroom or near a window will degrade faster. Store rolls in their packaging in a cool, dry location.

Q: Do you sell thermal rolls in bulk?
A: Yes. Bulk packs are available for high-volume businesses. Buying in bulk reduces the per-roll cost and minimises re-ordering frequency. Contact us on 1300 115 808 to discuss bulk pricing for your volume requirements.

Q: Why is my thermal printer printing blank receipts?
A: The most common cause is the paper being loaded the wrong way. Thermal paper only prints on the coated side — if the roll is loaded backwards (uncoated side against the print head), you will get a blank receipt. Remove the roll, flip it, and reload. The coated side is the slightly shinier side and will darken if you scratch it with a fingernail.
