Medical Grade Keyboards & Mouse for Hospitals, Clinics & Healthcare Environments
Medical grade keyboards and mice are engineered specifically for clinical and healthcare environments where infection control, chemical resistance, and reliable performance under frequent cleaning are non-negotiable. POS Plaza stocks medical grade input devices from Seal Shield, KSI, and Element — all IP66 or IP68 rated, antibacterial, and designed to withstand repeated disinfection with hospital-grade cleaning agents. Prices from $65 inc GST, with same-day dispatch from our Sydney warehouse.
What makes a keyboard or mouse "medical grade"?
A medical grade keyboard or mouse meets a specific set of hygiene, durability, and safety standards that standard consumer or office input devices do not:
- IP-rated waterproofing and dustproofing — Medical grade devices carry an IP65, IP66, or IP68 ingress protection rating, meaning they are sealed against dust, splashes, and full liquid submersion. This allows them to be wiped, sprayed, or immersed without damaging the internal electronics.
- Disinfectant-safe surfaces — Surfaces are treated or constructed to withstand repeated application of hospital-grade disinfectants including bleach solutions (up to 10%), isopropyl alcohol (IPA), hydrogen peroxide, and quaternary ammonium compounds (quats) without degrading, discolouring, or allowing pathogen penetration.
- Antibacterial material — Many models incorporate antimicrobial additives into the keyboard housing itself (EPA-registered antimicrobial protection), providing baseline protection against bacterial growth between cleaning cycles.
- Sealed key construction — No gaps or crevices between keycaps where bacteria, fluids, or particulate can accumulate. This is in stark contrast to standard keyboards where the spaces between keys are a recognised infection risk vector.
- Dishwasher-safe (select models) — Certain Seal Shield keyboards are rated for full dishwasher sanitisation at standard cycle temperatures, enabling the highest level of decontamination between patients or wards.
IP66 vs IP68 — what's the difference?
IP66 means the device is fully dustproof and protected against powerful water jets from any direction — sufficient for spray disinfection and surface wipe-down in clinical environments. Not rated for submersion.
IP68 is the higher standard — fully dustproof and rated for continuous immersion in water beyond 1 metre depth. IP68 devices can be fully submerged for cleaning or sterilisation (within the manufacturer's specified parameters). For hospital wards, ICUs, operating theatres, and any environment requiring the most rigorous decontamination protocols, IP68 is the recommended minimum.
Most products in our range are IP68. The Seal Shield 105K PS2 model is IP66. If in doubt, choose IP68.
Which brands do we stock?
Seal Shield is the market leader in medical grade input devices, with IP68-rated keyboards and mice that are dishwasher-safe and compatible with hospital disinfection protocols. The Seal Shield Silver Storm range includes both wired USB and wireless 2.4GHz mice, and backlit (GLOW) keyboards for low-light clinical environments. The Silver Seal GLOW keyboard is particularly popular in operating theatres and radiology suites where ambient lighting is reduced. Seal Shield devices carry EPA-registered antimicrobial protection and are widely specified by Australian hospitals and aged care facilities. Prices from $129 inc GST.
KSI manufactures compact, sealed medical keyboards designed for clinical workstations and point-of-care devices where space is limited. The KSI Mini range features an 86-key compact layout with 104-key functionality — ideal for mounting on a medical cart or bedside workstation with minimal footprint. The KSI 1802R SX model includes integrated RFID capability, allowing clinicians to authenticate via a proximity card directly at the keyboard — eliminating the need for a separate RFID reader. The Mini with Trackball model combines keyboard and pointing device in one sealed unit, ideal for environments where a separate mouse is impractical. Prices from $149 inc GST.
Element offers a newer range of IP68-rated medical grade keyboards and mice that includes wireless connectivity options for clinicians who need cable-free flexibility at the point of care. The ECT105W wireless keyboard and ECT409 wireless mouse use a sealed USB nano-receiver and are rated IP68 for full washdown compatibility. The ECT408-BL wired USB mouse is a cost-effective entry point for clinical desktop environments. Prices from $65 inc GST.
Where are medical grade keyboards used?
Hospitals and public health: ICU, emergency, operating theatres, wards, nurses' stations, and clinical administration. IP68 keyboards are standard in any area with high infection risk or frequent cleaning cycles. Backlit models (Seal Shield GLOW) are specified in low-light clinical areas.
Aged care facilities: Resident workstations, nurses' stations, and medication management terminals. Easy-clean surfaces reduce infection transmission risk between residents and staff.
Dental and specialist clinics: Chairside terminals, treatment room workstations, and reception. Dental environments are exposed to a wide range of biological and chemical contaminants — sealed, disinfectant-safe devices are the correct specification.
Pharmacy and dispensing: Dispensing workstations, pharmacy counters, and compounding areas. The KSI RFID keyboard is particularly valued in pharmacy environments where user authentication is required for controlled substance dispensing.
Pathology and laboratories: Sample logging, specimen processing workstations, and laboratory bench environments exposed to chemical agents and biological material.
Veterinary clinics: Consultation rooms, treatment areas, and surgical suites. The same infection control requirements that apply in human healthcare apply in veterinary practice.
Are medical grade keyboards compatible with standard computers?
Yes. All USB models in our range connect as standard HID (Human Interface Device) keyboard and mouse devices — no specialist drivers are required on Windows, macOS, or Linux. They work with any clinical workstation, medical cart computer, all-in-one terminal, or standard desktop PC. The KSI 1802R SX RFID model requires a compatible RFID middleware application but the keyboard component itself works as a standard USB keyboard. The Seal Shield PS2 model (105K IP66) connects via a PS/2 port and is suited to legacy clinical workstations that do not have USB ports.

Frequently asked questions — medical grade keyboards & mice
Q: Can medical grade keyboards be put in a dishwasher?
A: Select Seal Shield models are rated dishwasher-safe — check the individual product specifications. Dishwasher-safe keyboards can be sanitised on a standard dishwasher cycle, providing a higher level of decontamination than surface wiping alone. Not all medical grade keyboards support this — look for "dishwasher safe" in the product title or specifications.
Q: What cleaning products are safe to use on medical grade keyboards?
A: IP68-rated medical keyboards in our range are compatible with hospital-grade disinfectants including bleach solutions (up to 10% sodium hypochlorite), isopropyl alcohol (70% IPA), hydrogen peroxide wipes, and quaternary ammonium (quat) solutions. Always consult the specific product's cleaning guide, as compatibility can vary between models and brands.
Q: What is the difference between antibacterial and antimicrobial keyboards?
A: "Antibacterial" refers to resistance specifically to bacteria. "Antimicrobial" is a broader term covering bacteria, fungi, mould, and some viruses. Seal Shield devices carry EPA-registered antimicrobial protection built into the device housing material itself — this provides baseline protection between cleaning cycles but does not replace regular disinfection protocols.
Q: Do medical keyboards work with clinical information systems like EMR/EHR software?
A: Yes. Medical grade keyboards behave as standard USB or PS/2 keyboard devices and are fully compatible with all clinical information systems including Cerner, Epic, Meditech, Best Practice, Medical Director, and other EMR/EHR platforms used in Australian healthcare. The KSI RFID model supports card-based authentication that integrates with systems using proximity card login.
Q: Do you supply to government hospitals and healthcare facilities?
A: Yes. We accept purchase orders from Australian public hospitals, state health departments, Primary Health Networks, aged care providers, and GP clinics. Contact us on 1300 115 808 or email sales@posplaza.com.au for procurement and tender support.
Q: Are wireless medical grade keyboards and mice available?
A: Yes. Element's ECT105W keyboard and ECT409 mouse are wireless IP68-rated devices connecting via a sealed USB nano-receiver. The Seal Shield Silver Storm wireless mouse connects via 2.4GHz USB receiver. Wireless models are particularly useful on medical carts, adjustable workstations, and in areas where cable management is a hygiene concern.
